I'm trying to render out a scene with tons of geometry. After Vray calculates the instances, it starts "Building Static Raycast Accelator." Vray then proceeds to crash. What can I do? Please help. Thanks.

you are most likely running out of memory. Read about the 3gbswitch on this forum.Dmitry Vinnik

That will help you as well.
Weird tho, they say that 2D uses more memory than 3D... I have always found the opposite.. ahh well not gonna argue with the kings

Well as far as i remember 2D did use more in some tests here too. If i recall right vlado mentioned that´s because the 2D displacement has to be presampled as a whole before actually rendering while 3D displacement can be presampled on a par-bucket basis.

Maybe you guys can give me some advice on my project. I'm modelling a few Mies buildings here in Chicago and most of these buildings are just instanced geometry. The problem is that I have thousands of window frames, window panes and drapery. I plan deleting some of these items when I find out the camera view that I'm going to use and what will actually be seen in the view. I plan on modelling 7 buildings in all. I have 3 building so far and I get this message and the crashing of Vray. I still have another 4 buildings to go. I'm going to be rendering out my scene at 3600X2400. Any advice that you can give in order to get this project done and without worrying about crashing? Thanks, I do appreciate the info.

look into vray proxies. They allow to render infinite polys without running out of memory.Dmitry Vinnik

Infinite IS incorrect and misleading.
It's a LOT more complex than it sounds from such a statement as the one you made, which is easily proven false, in any case (LC, anyone?).
Sure, they allow to load/unload geometry to/from ram upon raycaster request, but some thought has to be put into the setup of a scene, otherwise collapse is guaranteed, proxies or not.
There is, however, lots written about it in the forums, do make a search and thou shalt find.
