If you have a vray hdri as a map and you happen to turn on the checker box that normally displays the map in the viewport max crashes when you turn that off.
1. put a vray hdri in the diffuse slot of a material.
2. assign the material to an object
3. hit the "show material in viewport" button at the base material level
4. uncheck the same button and it should crash.
Please confirm. Maybe it is only on my machine. I repeated those steps in a blank scene with a different material and used a sphere and it crashed. It might be worth looking into.
The reason I was trying to do that is I wanted a quick way to preview what the hdri was looking like in the viewport. That way I had a better realization of what angle the map was at. I'll find a different way.
