  • Ram Full - Prepass only using 25% cpu

Trying to render a masterplan. Has lots of xrefs including trees and cars.

The scene opens and uses 2.2gb of ram. I have a total of 4.

I select render to vray file. and as it starts to do the prepass the ram jumps upto 4.85gb. The cpu seems to then be limited to only 25%

The virutal memory in task manager shows max using 4gb. But real memory shows only 2.8gb.

    System specs
    2 x 5160
    4gb ram
    x64 windows
    x64 max
    x64 vray.

It may be that Window is swapping some of the memory to disk. It may also happen if you are using VRayProxy files and/or displacement and you have too low Dynamic memory threshold.

Have you disabled the "Render to memory" option in the V-Ray VFB? Also, additional memory can be saved if you set the 3dsmax resolution to be something like 320x200 and use a different resolution for the actual V-Ray VFB.

    Best regards,
    Vlado

Whats a good figure for the dynamic memory threshold ?

I've disabled rendering to any frame buffer, and just save out as a vray file. Seems to be working at the moment ok. Rendering at ram usage of 4.28gb.

Trying to find the link the vrayimg file gui program seems to be down, anyone have a mirror ?

Just tried rendering again, This time its only using 25% cpu again.

Very frustrating. Any other suggestions ?

          Well, here are some suggestions:

(*) make sure that the Multithreaded option is checked in the Customize menu in the Render tab - it is in the habit of turning itself off sometimes.

(*) to determine if it is a disk swap issue, try to delete some geometry and see if it helps.

(*) make sure you are NOT using the bitmap pager in 3dsmax.

(*) to rule out any bitmap problems, you can try to assign a grey material to everything.

(*) make sure you are using "Static" default geometry in V-Ray System rollout.

(*) if you are using any VRayProxies, displacement, VRayFur, try to disable them and see if it helps.

(*) try a different scene and see if there is any difference.

          Best regards,
          Vlado

It would have been more appropriate to send the entire log to me at vlado@chaosgroup.com as the most important parts (sd tree statistics and memory usage) are missing above; the parts above do show that there is a lot of geometry in the scene, but you mentioned this already.

                            Best regards,
                            Vlado
