  • VRay fails to net render when user logged in

I have the VRay license server on a network render server machine. Backburner is configured as service running a special user account. It doesn't fail if rendering is running manually with the same user account using server.exe. And it doesn't fail if no-one oi logged in. It fails only if a user (doesn't matter who) is logged in on that machine.

I have tried different user accounts for vray license server service but no difference. And the problem is only VRay problem because MAX scanline doesn't fail.

Could there be some licensing conflict / VRay doesn't get the license when a license service is running on the same machine that has backburner service. Or should the licensing on that machine be configured in different way like requesting license directly from dongle / software license?

    Anyone else having similar problems?

This is the log from rendering machine:
2007/06/21 12:08:49 INF Job 'C25_TruckFire' received and ready

2007/06/21 12:09:00 INF Application is down

It crashes right after VRay is loaded so it seems that it doesn't get the license for some reason.

I have tried to configure the licensing to use localhost and the host name itself, no difference.

    This is from vrlservice_log.txt:

    97394: [2007/Jun/21|12:08:50] Request from 127.0.0.1 (user: , pass: )

Seems like jus before VRay crashes the localhost has asked a license from vrlservice.

And this is not scene related, happens with any scene with VRay as renderer.

do you have any firewalls running?

I don't think it is firewall problem because all other machines can access the license fine (they are configured to use the vRay license server). Windows Firewall allows the 30304 port and the vrlservice.exe, so does the company network firewall.

And the machine get's the license fine when opening VRay from MAX. And it renders fine on network if I just log off.

It is something to do with network rendering running as service and if someone is logged in. Usually we are working on our own user names logged in and max is network rendering using special user account. And when this account + our own accounts are at the same time in that machine VRay doesn't render.

And this happens only on the pc that has the VRay license server. On other machine same network rendering account renders fine on background and I can still be logged in.

Found the problem. I have Matrox RTX2 video editing card and every time user logs in it starts a system tray application for avi playback on video outputs. This conflicts with MAX in some way and causes MAX crash.

This is still strange that MAX didn't crash when rendering with scanline. It crashed with VRay. Does VRay VFB cause this? It is not visible when network rendering but could it reserve some video overlay / DirectX things or similar that conflicts with Matrox tool. Or maybe it is only MAX which is using DirectX even if in software mode.

Anyway removing this utility from startup applications solved the problem...

very odd indeed. I wonder if the license system of vray confilcts with that matrox application

VRay gets the license when using MAX normally... And scanline doesn't have this problem. So this is something to do with VRay and Matrox tool and only in network render mode. Normally everything works.
