  • DR + XREF + Proxies = problem?

I'm using XREFed scenes for the first time in years. I got away from them years ago, but this job is getting out of control and XREFing the various components would be ideal.

I seem to recall that DR or Backburner or somethings would not work with XREFs in the past, but that seems to have been resolved now. I just did a DR test with the scene split up and XREFed, and it worked - EXCEPT vray proxies that are in an XREFed scene. Is this a known issue, or am I missing something?

FWIW, I'm on MAX8, VRay 1.5RC3, and all paths are UNC.

I'm working on a monster of a scene too and I'm using Xref scenes, but none of my proxies are xrefed. They are all in the final scene file and it's working just fine. Can you do it that way?

That is certainly an option. It is kind of counter-intuitive though. For instance... say my project is a large development. I may have houses in one or more separate files, the terrain in another, the shopping mall in another, etc....

Instancing the trees (proxies) into the terrain file makes a lot of sense because I can scatter, then glue them to the ground object in that file. If I did the trees in the main file, I couldn't glue them to an external object.

If necessary, I guess I can do the placement, then bring all proxies into the master file. My thinking though was that my master file would contain only XREF links, lighting, and cameras.

In your case, the way you're wanting to do it does sound better. It's a shame it won't work. My site is really flat, so I'm just instancing my proxied tress around by hand...not to big of a deal.

I would suggest to import just the ground object into the final scene as a non-renderable object just to help with the scattering. Doing the placements in another file and taking the proxies over sounds counter-intuitive

This seems to work fine here when I tried it just now (proxies in an X-Ref'd scene), so I'm not sure what may be the problem in the particular case.

            Best regards,
            Vlado
