  • Crash at render time ... Always on a deadline too!

I'm having crashes for the first time on a large scene. Of course, it is at a time when I really need to get images out!

I've set this scene up with XREFs. Main scene is 5mb. Scenes XREF'd in are 7mb, 21mb, and 11mb.

Lots of vrproxies in this scene. Mostly trees. Probably about 8 unique proxies with a total number of around 1000 instances. Most are in the XREF files.

I'm using dynamic memory, and have tried limits from 1000 to 1600 with the same result. At crash time, I get a generic XP popup saying "3dsMax has caused an error..." It crashes every time while building the light cache, before the status bar even starts. (When I tried it with static memory, I got a rather violent "Unhandled exception - Memory allocation failure")

Nothing notable in the message window or the vraylog.txt file.

Not using DR at the moment.

    Computer is a c2d 6400 with 2GB RAM, WinXP, MAX8, VRay 1.5 RC3.
At crash time, task manager shows CPU usage at 4% and PF usage ramping slowly up to 2GB. (Available physical memory ends at around 37k)

Along the lines of Marc's recent similar post, units in all files are set to inches, as that's what they are modeled in since I do arch vis almost exclusively.

    That should about cover it.
    Any help out there???

have you considered trying the /3gb switch? Unfortunately with the 2gb address limit, your not even allowed to use your swap file.
