cpnichols: just watched your online tutorial and it makes it very clear. Now I just need to find out some way of remembering it!

The only thing is that we are on Max8 with Vray 1.5 RC3 so the option 'don't affect colours' in the gamma settings isn't available. Is this of concern?

We have typically used Irmap/LC in our work (mostly stills). I assume the same rules apply.
    Kind Regards,

Right, the cpnichols tutorial suggests putting the Global subdivs multiplier down to 0.01 which in effect, multiplies every subdiv value in a scene (for lighs, materials, glossies, shadows etc) by 0.01 resulting in an overall Subdivision of 1 (as a subdiv is always an integer).

By doing this, I can use the QMC image sampler to control all aspects of noise in a scene. I think I understand this.

However, in the scenes in which I am working, when I set the global sibdivs multiplier to .01, I get pretty high blotchiness even with high settings for the min/max qmc subdivs and pretty low clr thrshold (min=1, max=25, clr=0.02 for example).

Shouldn't the max of 25 effectivly multiply up all the subdivs of the scene to around 25 or so and remove blotchiness?
      Kind Regards,

Only use the .01 global modifier for testing purposes when you want to speed up your renders to be faster than a fixed rate of 1 subdivision. The .01 global modifier is only for testing. You can then keep increasing it to .25 and .5 etc etc to keep getting better results while still being faster than just using fixed subdivision of 1.

For final renders put the global multiplier back to 1 and set your min/max subdivisions accordingly.

got another scene (side project) where the lighting conditions r very low to achieve dim like lighting....and oh boy....the noise on glossy surfaces is everywhere!!!! grrrrrrrrrrr.....tried every setting i could search for on this forum ...nothing helped

            1. it seems that the darker the diffuse color of the material with glossy reflections...the more apparent and bigger grain the noise is

            2. dont tell me vray is not capable computing such scenes in low light conditions without getting noisy results )))))

            3. have heard that vrayfinal fixes some sampling issues with "dont affect colors" in color mapping rolout but i cannot use vrayfinal as were in middle of the projects a we dont want anything to be reinstalled

will post the result soon once computed
