  • Problem with 3dsmax 9 x64 Rev3 and Vray using network

I am using 1 computer for the license server. Attached to that is also the dongle. On my workstation I am running 3dsmax 9 x64 on WinXP Pro x64. I am using 1.5 on the machines. The workstation can not find the license. Before with the software license it worked fine. What could it be?

Does not work with or without firewall.

I believe the software license was using port 30303, the dongle is set to 30304 by default, when you set up the remote computer what port is it pointing at?

Also you need to still run the vrlserver on the machine with the dongle.

      thanks RErender

The vrl server and the dongle is running on my laptop. The workstation is open for port 30304 looking to my ip of my laptop.

Is there anyhing I need to get from the dongle info to put on the workstation for it to work?

no you don't need any info from the dongle.

have you tried to connect with the laptops name instead of ip?

otherwise any antivirus or firewall that might be getting in the way?

you might also just install the dongle on the workstation

I have tried the laptop name with no success. Let me ask you this. Can I run on the dongle alone? Do I not need the vrl server as well? If so I thought the vrl license was attached to the nic card or similar of 1 computer so I would not be able to take it and install on the workstation. Can you clarify.

You need to start backburner manager on the license-host and the backburner server on the slave(s) and run at least one normal networkrender (no DR).

After this DR will work and you can shutdown the backburner manager and server if you don't need them.

Have you reinstalled vray? If you are using RC3+ you will need to reinstall vray and choose the dongle option, with 1.50 there isn't the choice. The dongle does require a vrl server but it is a different one than with the software license/authcode. Also, the vray installation requires updated files to access the dongle, specifically the cgauth file.

I'm sorry, i misunderstood, discard my previous post plz, that only references to when you need to get DR to work.

Even on the machine with the dongle, Vray can only obtain a license through the License Server. The license server will connect to the dongle.

You can start the server manually, on the machine with the dongle, it's in the Start menu under Chaosgroup -> Licensing. Or run it as a service by registering the service: Chaosgroup -> Licensing -> Administration.

                Hope this helps

Also, I forgot to say that, the dongle is completely portable it does not rely on the nic or mac address or anything else. It can be moved to any machine that has the wibu drivers installed and new vrl server.
