  • unable to obtain a license on slave machines

    Hi all,

After installing vray 1.5 final our slaves report the following: error could not obtain a license.

I installed vray with the slave option.

The workstations are fine, everything is working ok, i don't see why the slaves are looking for a license.

    Anyone knows a solution?

    Thanks,

    Erik

When you ran the installation on the render slaves, did you choose the "Render slave" installation type? If you did, then at the end of the installation, you should have been presented with a dialog that allows you to enter the location of the license server, where you must put the IP address or name of a machine which has a license server running.

The slaves do not specifically look for a license, but for a working license server.

    Best regards,
    Vlado

we are trying install 1.5 on some render boxes....

selected the option render slave (plugins, etc only)..... entered a primary and secondary license (we have two licenses running; one on my machine and one on another 3d guys machine)

when trying to run dr- we get warning messages that say:
could not connect to host (ip_address of slave); No connection could be made because the target machine actively refused it......

im also noticing that when I go to a slave machine - it seems to be pulling up a dummy project but quickly goes away and continues to do so.....

        Any help would be appreciated.

you need to run those atleast once if its a new install on those systems of 3dsmax. after you have run them once you dont need to do that again

i was just reading some other posts..... when I run the BB Server and manager..... says trying to run max8 (which is still installed....) I just read i might need to uninstall BB3 for 2007? is this true? when trying to install the BB 2007 it asks me do I want to continue.... I am assuming yes!!!!

could you verify this is the right process.

Does that mean that we have to have a dongle on our LAN all the time to be able to render using our farm?

Situation is this. We own two dongles with one license on each but they reside on our laptops since we work alot out of office. And we are not always on-line.

Or did I miss something. I really suck at reading instructions.

I think it only needs license when sending the job. After slaves grab it it's rendering fine. I think there might be a problem when you have more jobs than I guess for each job slaves will need at the begining to grab the license.

As I explained this in another thread, once you have set up the job and sent it to the farm, you can take the dongle with you, but leave the license server running. Since the render slaves only need to connect to the license server, without taking a license, this will work fine.

I have just had the same problem with my render slaves not being able to see the license server. I knew it was setup correctly so that made it all the more confusing.

The problem or solution was that the machine with the license server files had to have its folder (with the license server files in it) Shared so that the slaves could access the files.

                        Simple but frustrating.
