  • VRAY Framebuffer EXR issue

I am saving an EXR file from the framebuffer at render. This process works very well with the passes intact, however whenever I render passes VRAY save the exr with ZIP16 compression. I cannot find a way to change this. I would rather have uncompressed images as they load faster in te composite app. Is this possible?

What would really be nice eventually is to have the exr as a drop down selection in the save dialog of the frame buffer.

There is currently no option to change the compression type (only the bits per pixel using the renderers.current.output_rawExrUseHalf option), but I'll make a note to add this.

EXR is available as a save file format, since 3ds Max supports it. However, this requires the 3ds Max RFW to be generated.

    Best regards,
    Vlado

      Hello dcullipher,

what comp app are you using? It may be that the slow loading is not related to the compression type but to the tiledbase / scanlinebased thing.
VRay writes the exrs tilebased (bucketwise) where as e.g. Nuke wants to read them scanlinebased. This leads to extrem slow loading times in nuke. What we do is to convert the exrs to exrs after rendering.

how do you guys do this dimo?

is it custom software, or through Nuke?

both would work, in our case it's custom to free the nuke render licenses during conversions.

Thanks for the help. We are using AE with the ProEXR extension. I cannot find a way to convert these items while keeping the layers intact. Maybe only Nuke or Fusion can do this. Any ideas?

Also what is strange is that as long as I don't include render passes the Vray FB take sit cue from the Max save settings as far comperssion. As sson as I add render elements it just defaults to Zip16.
