I have experimented with Advanced Raytraced Shadows with 'Simple' AA. And it often fly's compared to VRayshadows.
But when the scenes get very large and/or have many IES lights, VRayshadows seems faster again. Not sure why - but this has been an issue since the latest official VRay build.
Also if you render without Store Direct Light - it eats your time.
I have had to switch to normal spots again with projector maps
Some development/optimizations is something they should look more into. I think many readers in here (or more passive VRay users) also needs some speed gain here.
I often use more than 250+ lights and I think im not the only one
This has been an issue for a while, I had hoped it would have been resolved by now.
It cannot be resolved in any other way than us writing a new IES light plugin; even if/when we do this, the issues with the standard 3ds Max photometric lights will remain.
Cool... maybe a section under VRaylight parameter to load and adjust IES data or maybe a new VRay light type, might be easier to do than fiddling with 3dsmax photometric lights as they currently stand.
VRay IES would be really nice, right now I have a scene which I have to change all the lights to standard lights because the IES is like 100x slower. IES lights with the render speed of VRay lights would be amazing.
