  • v-ray 'cooldown' time in max 9

this topis should go into the PROBLEMS section, but I made a mistake and posted it here.
    so sorry about the mess...

when I cancel a rendering (or it ends by itself) it takes anywhere between 20s to over a minute to 'cool down' - max is locked and I can't do anything but wait. It happens only in max 9 and with v-ray 1.5 rc3 - 1.5 final, with rather large scenes - polycount wise.

In max 8 all is fine - at render end/termination I regain control of max allmost instantly.

What is the problem? Is it in v-ray or max itself?

    my setup: max9 32 bit, xp pro, 4 gig/3gig switch, v-ray 1.5 final

I believe this is a known problem, in RC3, 4 and 5 which is one of 12 reasons I stayed at RC2 until it was fixed. Its still happening with 1.50? Damn. I was going to upgrade next month...

Unfortunately there is nothing more that we can do about this issue; as I said before it happens because of some fundamental changes in the 3ds Max 9 API. We can only hope that things have been optimized in 3ds Max 2008.

Clifton, there is no change in this regard between RC2 and RC3, as far as I remember. So if RC2 is working for you, so should all later V-Ray versions.

      Best regards,
      Vlado

Switching to 1.5 final has made a HUGE difference for us with that problem. We typically work with pretty high poly scenes and don't really have that problem anymore. We are on Max 9,32bit.

One thing I have noticed is that if you have any architectural materials in your scene it can really cause hang-ups in Vray. Sometimes I have noticed they get there by accident - maybe it has something to do with importing acad models or something...not sure. But if I change any architectural material to just a plain Vray material, the lag time goes away completely. So you might wanna check for that.
