  • texture toggle crashes max

ever since upgrading to 1.5 (just last week), i have noticed that max is very unstable when toggling on / off viewport texture maps in vray materials. i have been able to crash my software consistently when testing this problem. it is virtually guaranteed to crash if i toggle the textures at the top level of a material, and only crashes sometimes if i toggle through a sub-map slot.
vray 1.5 is the only thing that has changed on my system.

anyone else have this problem? any suggestions?

    thanks

I've seen this on a small % of our systems over the years going back to 1.09. You might want to try reinstalling Max.

I didn't have the problem with switching textures on and off, but I did have a scene that always crashed when I switched from wireframe to shaded view. There was a corrupt object somewhere but I couldn't be bothered to look for it.

I just added a Text object in my camera view that said: "Don't press F3 in Camera View"

I've just re-installed my system, this time with XP 64 bits and VRay 1.50.00 but I haven't tested if the scene still crashes...

I think this should be corrected for the SP, but for the time being it would be best to keep off of the show map in viewport feature (or use OpenGL).

            Hello Vlado,
I have been having the same crashing issue with display textures on vray materials when using max 2008 with VRsp2. Do you think reinstalling max would help in solving the issue, or do you think it may still be a VRay issue?
Of course, I could switch to OpenGL, but considering my scene has several million polygons, it can be a major headache when texturing stuff, because the OpenGL Max drivers are simply the slowest I've witnessed on a 3D app.

This has been an ongoing issue for me for quite some time.

There is nothing more that I can do about this issue unfortunately. Maybe updating your video drivers may help; otherwise, simply use the display texture button for the textures themselves, rather than for the material.

You can also set the environment variable "VRAY_SHOW_MTL_MAPS" to "0" to disable the showing of textures by VRayMtl, in case you click the button accidentally.

                Best regards,
                Vlado

Hmm. This seems to be common...

I experienced the same, but not really reproducable, randomly it seems to rely on additional, other factors that come into play. In the meanwhile I switched my 8800GTX with Rivatuner to a Quadro 4600 including the appropriate MAX-drivers for Direct3D 9.0 and its way better now. I guess its rather a Graphics-Card/ OS issue than Vray-Problem.

In one scene where I use about 30 RPCs the reliability still is very poor and keeps me saving every 5 minutes. I am almost sure its a display-pipeline problem.

very annoying but true - since I wrote that it got worse?! Today I cannot show textures any more or toggle the material editor - it will crash MAX instantly. I hate it...

Now the crashing appears also when trying to pick a material from viewport to ME. Rather often, when opening the material editor the first time, a Vray Error Message appears, saying that something went wrong with Camera preparation...
