  • the best bug i've ever seen in max

I have not experienced this much fun since... max 2.

anyhow, your going to love this one: Save the file im working on - its just a two story house, then hit the close X top right.

come back from surfing, notice the file is still open, could swear i had closed max...

But this x for some reason does not close the program, what it does is deletes most of the geometry and just sits there. So i hit the x again and it asked me if i want to save.

    i mean COME ON!

yep, being seeing this a lot, and experiencing it.
that's why you have to use incremental save in my opinion...

We've had that also where it decides to delete most of the geometry for no reason other than to take the piss and make my life more colourful.

not sure if Max works the same way, but from my years of using formZ... when you saved it would write a temporary back-up file. then it would start writing the main file. if it crashed while writing that main file, you lost all of your geometry.

sometimes though, you could simply rename the temporary back-up file by changing the extension, and retrieve your data back to your previous save.

i wonder if max is doing something similar with the autoback file.

...but at the end of the day, incrementing the number on saves is vital to a productive work environment.

it isn't the worst bug. The worst bug is when you're saving file and got error that the file can't be saved. You try to save selected and same thign, basically you loose all you work becasue the file is corrupted and not saved at all.

When this problem occurs (in my case) 3dsmax tries to save the file. now a problem occurs and max is unable to save. this will cause 3dsmax to crash and you will have a corrupt file and your work not saved (so start looking in your autobak folder).
The problem could be network related (if you save over the network) or localy. in case of the network try disabeling or uninstalling all virus and firewalls, then try again. for me it was the virus scanner that cause a network failure on save due a conflict or some sort.
if it's localy start scanning you harddrive for bad sector and such.

Always try looking in the eventviewer of windows to see if problems occur (run>eventvwr)
