  • Light Cache as final image

I'm sure this is an easy one, I'm sure I'm missing something obvious, but: I'm using Light Cache as my primary and QMC for secondary. The render goes through the calculating light cache phase, then when it renders, its rendering out what the light cache calculated instead of a final image (the final render is all faceted, ect). Don't Render Final Image is not checked and I've even completely stripped VRay out of the scene and reapplyed/re-set up and I get the same result. I'm just not sure what I'm missing here!

    Thanks!

The quality of the shadows that you get on primary GI is what you get on the final render. You will always get faceted/splochy renders with Lightcache as primary unless you use very high settings (10000 subdivisions and 0.01 sample size for example?), wich isn't practical for most production cases.

Think of LC as a helper to the primary engine to find fast a rough overall light distribuion on the scene, the primary GI is the one that must deal with the fine details and the smooth shadows.

I was right, that was a simple one =) Thanks for the quick response, for some reason I had a major brain fart on that one!

      Thanks again!

if you really want to you could use light cache for both secondary and primary, in PPT mode and you get a progressively less noisy image.

then just set the samples high enough so it runs forever and cancel the render when your happy with it

but its slower to do things this way in most cases, you'd want Irradiance or brute as primary.

Ueing LC for primary is a valid option (without the need for super high settings)

THe animation in my avatar was done with LC as primary. Renders super fast. Problem is LC as primary is not very accurate and I would generally recommend it.

On a side not if you have the secondary set to anything other than LC then its basically ignore so LC primary with QMC as secondary.. well the QMC doesnt do anything at all.

I believe you need to set the pre filter to say 50 to get smooth results when using LC as primary. Been awhile since I did it that way but abit of tinkernig will certainly get you a smooth result with reasonable subdivs .. say around 1000
