  • VRAY 1.500 SP1 crashes on scene load using DirectX

Just upgraded from 1.500 to 1.500 SP1 and now the huge scene I was working on this morning without problems will crash Max9 on loading. (In 64 bit and 32 bit Max9)

If I start Max in OpenGL or Software mode I can open and work fine.

    Anyone else getting this?

Can you get me that scene? (or at least the material that has the Show map in viewport option ON)

Looks like it's not possible to get this right so we'll probably just disable DirectX display of the V-Ray material; instead you can directly show only the maps that you need.

    Best regards,
    Vlado

Will email it to you... once I have reduced it in size.

I experienced crashes with the DX display on very dense meshes.
        Without VRay installed, that is.
Try to display a standard DX material , instead of a VRay one, and see if that works.

See if ther're any new drivers for your graphics card to be found on the net. That worked for most of the huge scenes here on 64bit systems.

Thanks guys, but it is a VRAY issue - roll back to 1.500 release and it works fine.

I did try latest beta video drivers too, but same deal.

Thanks for the scene David, I'm looking at it now...

It doesn't crash here as I don't have the bitmaps from the scene though.

here i have the same problem on a scene, and i found a solution... (the scene doesn't crash without 1.50 rc but crash with the final and also sp1...)

I have isolated some parts of the scene into different layer to found what's the problem, after an hour (our scene is also big...) i found thats into a room (bathroom lol) and i isolated the scene into a simple file, when it's done i search into the room what's the element crash the scene, first tim i do i was sure that's a polygonal problem but after a lot of test i've found that's a Vray material which was suddenly corrupted... I made the same material into the material editor and erase the old one, apply the new and, miracle, it's working...

I hope it could help you a little...
                  i ll be back

Hey! new discovery - this bug in RC1 affects a lot more files...

VRAY crashes in directX when opening even the benchmark scene file : NEW Benchmark scene (Max 8 Vray RC3 required)http://www.arnoldimaging.com/spurcell/VrayRC3_Max8_Benchmark_01.rar

If I open in Open GL mode (avoiding crash) and then render - it renders much lighter (is blown out) and the render takes twice as long...

EDIT: Correction - that colour/render change is only if I click yes to updating to new camera/lighting models - the File does crash on open in direct X though.

Does it crash if you open the files on a different machine? I have not been able to reproduce this here though, with any of these files.

                      Best regards,

I have just installed Vray 1.50 SP1 with VIZ 2007 and all our old scenes crash at scene load up. I have tried the OpenGL and the Software display drivers, and our scenes crash with either driver. If I merge into a new scene, things seem to work fine, and if I revert back to RC3, everything works fine as well. Has anyone else experienced this?

tarn, this would be a different issue then (the original one happened only with DirectX, but went away with OpenGL or software rendering). If you wish, you can try to send me one such scene to vlado@chaosgroup.com and I'll try to see what's going on if I can reproduce it.

                          Best regards,
                          Vlado

I had a problem with SP1 where it would crash if I hovered my mouse over my Television in the scene. It only happens with SP1, and only in that scene. I wonder if SP1 has a hard time with certain types of geometry.

The viewport issues are related to materials not to geometry; if any of the materials on the TV have their Show map in viewport option ON, turning it off will probably clear the issues.

                              Best regards,
