  • Treestorm crashing render

    Hi there,
Im having major problems trying to get treestorm trees rendering consistently without crashing.
The file im testing has a large number of unique trees (non instanced) with treestorm wind applied.
Vray gets to the transforming vertices stage and crashes.
Memory is not an issue my machine has 4gb and im using max 9 x64.
If I collapse the trees to editable meshes all works as expected.

Im at a loss on this one and I need some urgent help.
I can supply the file if needed.

Thanks in advance for your help

I have the same on 64bit systems. Usualy max crashes when I have the trees in any other then full mode in my view ports. I now set them to full mode and then select display as box. That will work most of the time.

should that not work, it's pretty easy to script a mesh snapshotting and morpher controller so that it will load the different targets per frame.
Wouldn't know if it'd work perfectly with moblur, but i guess it would.

You will see that max crashes per tree. Let's say you have 3 different trees in your scene. After the first crash, when opening the recovery file you'll see that 1 tree is diplayed in full mode. Hit render and it crashes again. Open the new recovery file (recover-recover) and the second tree will be displayed in full mode. After the next crash (recover-recover-recover) it will work fine. It's either a not so well writen plug-in or a typical max 9 thing (crashes on nearly everything) or a direct 3d thing, or all three.

just tried your box mode trick Marc and it renders!
Hopefully it works on my actual scene file!

Incidentally I have a very similar problem, and I couldn't get it to render on x64 with 4GB. I have a few Treestorm trees (7-10), and a whole load of instanced meshers which look at them.

With wind *and* motion blur on, Vray spends forever trying to transform the vertices, and effectively hangs. I guess the motionblur acclerator is calculating the position of all those vertices at every sample on every frame, which is a bit much.

With either option off, eg motion blur on still trees, or wind on non-blurred trees, it will render. Our solution was to do the moblur in post.
