  • vray sphere viewport problem

Vray sphere is fouling up my viewports badly. Here's a before and after screen shot

It probably has something to do with max's zoom/scale/limits and the fact that vray sphere is "infinite" in size. If I delete the sphere the viewports go back to normal. I've tried freezing the sphere which doesn't solve anything. Also I've tried different viewport drivers. Is there something that can be done?

    Thanks

I should add that this only happens to non camera viewports

Just a stab, but does turning on "ignore extents" help?

Good idea but no it doesn't help

Which 3ds Max version is that? What is the size of your sphere? The sphere is finite in size and it does report its bounding box to 3ds Max, so I'm not sure what else may be wrong.

We have seen this here without any VRaySphere in the scene. In fact, without any VRay related stuff in the scene. We didn't quite get to any workaround, or find any reason for this. And also, sometimes the perspective views, sometimes the ortho views go crazy like this. And we have experienced this only with geometry heavy scenes, so we thought it is related to the amount of geometry.
But having you present a scene, where this strange behavior can be reproduced by putting in a specific object, and vanishes after deleting it might give a lead.

            best regards,

            A.

Ok it seems that making a smaller sphere solves the problem. Not really understanding how a vray sphere is infinite (but not really?) I'm using it for a cloud layer in conjunction with vraysky using vray 2sided material. The clouds vary in shade when changing the sphere size.

The 3ds Max viewport tries to automatically figure out the clipping distances from the size of the objects in your scene (the viewports always need some clipping planes to work properly, even if this option is off for your camera); if you have a very large object (like this VRaySphere in your example, although it can also simply be a very large plane), these automatic clipping distances might be inadequate for your scene. You can solve this by manually specifying the camera or viewport clipping planes.
