    Ah, in that case, just use the options of the 3ds Max OpenEXR saver to specify whether you want to use 8, 16 or 32 bits per channel.

      Ok.. I've just realised that by ticking "use realpixel RGB data" I screw up the exr file. 32-bit works just fine as long as I leave that checkbox clear.

      What situations would require you to tick that tickbox anyway?
