  • Possible Xref/displacement bug

    Hello people.

Have a look at this simple scene:
    http://www.pixelstudio.nl/download/xrefobj.zip

xrefobj contains a simple box with a uwv and a vraydisplacement modifier. displacement contains a simple checker map. this makes sure it has nothing to do with incorrent paths or something.

text.max is the scene file with a XrefObject reference to the xrefobj file with the box.
when you try to render the test.max the displacement is not rendered....??

    any1 how knows a sollution?
    Best regards,

the weird thing is when i merge it into the scene the displacement is fine and renders good.
i think i have used xrefscene that also had displacement and worked fine. so somehow the problem is with xref objects...

    btw: scene is max 2008

      Any news for this issue?

We are having the same problem, tried in MAX9 with VRay 1.5 RC4 and in MAX2008 with VRay 1.5 SP1 with no luck.

The temporary solution we've found is to use XRef objects with the modifier option set to merge (so Max only XRefs the base object and places the modifiers on top of it), but this isn't the way we would like to work.

xref objects with displacement don't seem to work. so i use xref scene what works perfect.

Yep, I can confirm this; I don't know if it can be corrected though - V-Ray does not seem to get information about the modifiers on the xref objects so that it can generate the proper displacement.

I might add my 2 kr here
            • In Max 2008 (maybe max9 also), there is an issue when using real world map coords with displacement on something being xrefed.
This was tested with xref scene, referencing a file built in cm into a scene done in meters.
All other maps (diffuse etc.) converted fine, but the displacement did not work. Fix was remapping the model and collapsing its stack. Not always a good solution.
            • A similar issue can be found with the vray edgetex.
Firstly, it does not retain any name given to it over a save\load session (saving, then loading the file).
In addition, it does not convert its units when referenced in (same example as over).
If the model being referenced was built in cm, and one set the edgetex as bump with a world unit size of 0.5, it will be half a meter in the scene file (or similar in any other scale unit).
            Signing out,
            Christian

Bumping for justice! I just made some pretty damn good furniture with painted displacement on the upholstery, and it doesn't show up when xrefd! Nooooooooooooooooooo!

You might be able to add the displacement through the object's material.
