  • Proxies in 1.5 - don't lower poly count ?

    Hello friends !

Today I have to prepare a huge scene file with proxies. We switched to the ne release, and now I am again very confused what happens here with the proxies.

I have an object in my scene file, convert that to a proxie.
    What happens ?

The poly count is the same.
I instance that proxies 10 times, and I do have 10times higher poly count

Well, do I something wrong now or was there any major change to the new release I didn't realize.

    Thx for every little help,

Maybe is what Vlado explained in this post?

I think this was mentioned earlier. The proxies work the same, they just now show up in the total poly count.

Yep, the viewport polygon count in 3ds Max 9 is not the actual polygon count in your scene, just the number of triangles displayed for the viewport. Since for the 1.5 version and the sp1, the triangles in the preview of the proxies (not the actual proxy geometry) is also added to this count.

        Best regards,

          hmm..

well, thx - I really was confused now, but if that will not take efect to the RAM it's great.
The only thing I could find out, and that's now a disadvantage, is that my viewport isn't fluidly anymore.

It seems to be, that max9 believes now, it has the geometry in the scene file.
As instance, when I instance 500 proxy meshes and I get about 4 million polys, the canvas is frozen like I would have real geometry.

I don't know, but what I can remember it was previously very fast in the viewport, because the proxies didn't really exist for max....

hmmm, well, I think I love the old version more - uff....

Switching the proxy Display mode to bounding box will probably help with that issue?

The only thing that has changed is how the proxies are displayed in the viewport, to take advantage of the improved viewport speed for meshes in 3ds Max 2008.
