I'm just now installing vray with the dongle on max 9. the instructions say that even the render nodes must have the license server running. Though, I do not even find the license server? It is running on the computer that actually has the dongle. I tried rending with the nodes, but they do not respond. What am I supposed to do? thanks.

The render slaves need to be able to connect to a working license server (usually on another machine); it is not necessary that they have the license server running.
If you chose the "Render slave" option during the installation, at the end of the process you should have been presented with a dialog where you can enter the IP address of the license server. If you chose the workstation install, you can bring up this dialog from the Start menu > Programs > Chaos Group > V-Ray for 3ds Max > Licensing > Administration > Change V-Ray client license settings.
