  • zdepth and aa

Are there any issues with zdepth channel and aa? My image is pretty smooth, but the zdepth channel is completely jagged, with no AA whatsoever.

IF you have "filtering" checked in the element settings it should have AA. Mind two important things tho:
    1) If the difference between two pixels is pretty high (wich happens easily if your distance settings are too small compared to the scene size) then it will look jagged even if there is AA. This is esp. valid for borders between objects and the background (=infinity)
    2) and even more important be careful with AA. A post process using the Z-Depth has no means to check if a pixel has subpixelmapping or not. It just looks at the absolute values wich means that AA actually moves a pixel in the z-direction. When using Z-dependant post DOF for example this means that the DOF on the edge will have the wrong radius.

    Kind Regards,

would the bit depth of the z-depth file make any difference? 8 vs 16?

of course. but not regarding visually checking the layer. As visually it looks the same as your Monitor displays 8bit. Generally float is the way to go for z-depth.

i use RPF zdeph because i don't have to measure distance, i have the zdeph i want in post-prod when i'm changing the settings. But i don't have AA with rpf zdeph. so for now, i do a scanline image very fast with double image size so when i'm importing it back, the jagging is ok.
is there any way to have vray zdeph with AA and to have infinite zdeph like in RPF zdeph ?

i don't know if you guys understood me

sory for my poor english, i'm french

Turn of "invert" turn off "clamp" and turn on "filtering"

That way you get infinite float z-depth.
