Another thing to try is to open the license settings from the Render scene dialog (the Edit/save licence settings button) and enter the same server name in all three fields.
First of all, make sure that you are using the latest license server. Next, if you are using SP2, on your workstation, you can try to go to the Control panel, System applet, Advanced section, Environment variables button, and create an environment variable "VRAY_CONNECT_TIMEOUT" without the quotes with a value if "50000" again without the quotes and see if it makes things any better.
When this happens again, type "http://servername:30304/getlog" in your browser and send me to vlado@chaosgroup.com the resulting log file from the license server. It will typically contain information why the license was refused (assuming the machines actually manage to get a connection to the license server at all).
Another helper is to notice the license error code (the number in brackets immediately after the "Cannot obtain license" message).

I tried all of these suggestions with no result other than a Could not obtain license" message", which was followed by "(-98 )". Hopefully the error code can give you some info about why this refuses to work.
This is a different issue, error code -98 means you don't have any licenses on your dongle, or they are the wrong licenses (e.g. you have an EDU build, but have downloaded the Advanced or NFR version). So the first thing to do in your case is to make sure you have the correct build. If this is so, then open the license server web page, there is a license ID at the bottom, please email this to vray@chaosgroup.com and we'll check this out (possibly we'll need to reprogram your dongle remotely).

Thanks, Vlado!
I'll check the build and the license ID and email you the results. With your permission, I'll also post here what I find to help other troubleshooters reading the forum.
We have 2 dongles plugged into one machine running the vrlservice. Periodically one of the licenses disappears, checking the status of the license server shows that we now only have 1 license.
The only way to get them both back is to stop the service, unplug & re-insert both dongles and then finally restart the service. Which is becoming a bit boring.
Any ideas?
Cheers,
Olly

its a shame

In fact, the system has been running on even larger render farms. The issue however, seems to be that the network traffic in such a large network can cause significant delays, enough for V-Ray to think the connection failed. You can either try to set the "VRAY_CONNECT_TIMEOUT" environment variable on the slaves to something like 50000 or more, or you can email me to vlado@chaosgroup.com for a build where this timeout is internally extended.
