  • SP2 and VFB History Option Crash

I know this is not officially a feature, but it is really useful and we are now having problems with it in SP2. Basically if you save a couple images and try to load one of them it crashes max. Wanted to see if anyone else has this.

I've had that. managed to get it working again by emptying the history completely, turning it off, and restarting max properly.

I still have this problem. I am unable to reload any previous history states without a crash. Using Max 2008 64bit and Vray SP2. OS is Xp64

Do you get the 3ds Max CER dialog? If yes, can you email me to vlado@chaosgroup.com the 3ds Max dump log after a crash (it's in your temporary folder, and it's called 3dsmax_minidump.dmp or something like this; you can go to your temp folder if you open explorer and enter %TEMP% as the path in the Address bar).

        Best regards,
        Vlado

No dialog - it just crashes Max right to the desktop, no warnings, no anything.

Did you have any Render Elements enabled for the images that were saved in history previous to the crash? I always consider that I'm probably asking for a crash if I've been using history on 2k renders with many elements active. It doesn't happen when I open up history like you describe but after I tune some shaders with high res texmaps for a while I can be sure to expect a coffee break

If this is similar to what you're dealing with then maybe try creating some preview settings that you can use in conjunction with render history.

            Best regards,

Hi Jon, thanks for the help.

This happens with files even when I have no textures and no render elements selected. I either get nothing happening to the VFB when I load a saved history or it crashes totally. As it seems an uncommon problem it's likely something I'm doing, but no idea what.

I also get a crash whenever I try to load a saved image. Even with the most simple saved image.

Are all of you with this issue with 64-bit Windows?

[edit] Nevermind, several people sent me the crash dumps, so I will be looking into it.

                  Best regards,
                  Vlado

I am using Vista 64-bit. I get the same problem on another computer, that also has 64-bit Windows. Sent you the crash dump by email.

Yep, thanks for the files! I will look at them when I get back to the office (my laptop is 32-bit Windows only).

                      Best regards,
