  • License error (renderfarm)

    Hello,

We have been expericing serious problems on our
renderfarm. We have 6 individual dongles being used with our workstations
running 64bit Windows with 3dsmax 9 SP2. We are currently using Vray 1.5
    SP1.

The problem seems to be a licens problem: Suddenly a rendermachine
(randomly) loses its license - but keeps rendering with watermarks on the
alpha channel. The rendermachine needs to be rebooted before it reaquires
    a license.
This isn't exactly the best situation since our deadlines doesn't allow us
to rerender each project every time.

Because we're also using Maya - we use Royal Render as our render manager.
Could this perhaps be the problem? - or is this some kind of a known
    issue?

Why have you got so many dongles, wouldnt it be best to have one dongle with the lisences's on that .... thats what we do..

You can try to upgrade first the license server only and then maybe V-Ray itself from the SP2 version and see if it fixes the issue.

      Best regards,

I only act like I know everything, Rogers.

        Thanks for the answers!

We've upgraded to SP2 - and it seems to have solved the problem. So thanks alot

I have however noticed something rather weird:

One of my co-workers - who's sitting right next to me - cold rebooted his workstation because it had freezed. After it booted into Windows and he started 3dsmax - it somehow "stole" the Vray license from the workstation I'm sitting at; suddenly Vray couldn't get a license. The strange thing about this - is that all of our workstations has a dongle - so how this is possible, I really don't know. We haven't tested it over again cause we're quite busy at the moment -but anyone else experienced this?

Also - could this perhaps be fixed by only using a single dongle on a 24/7 server?

A single dongle would be your best option, sounds like your co worker has installed vray to look for a remote server.. not local..
