  • unexpected exception in network rendering

I am having a problem where a particular node on my farm continuously errors out on network renderings with "An unexpected exception has occurred in the network renderer and it is terminating."

I have completely removed and reinstalled Max 2008 64bit and VRay 1.5sp1 on this machine (can't go to sp2 or Max2009 yet). Other identical machines on the farm are rendering the job with no problem.

I have increased the system's page file size (for some reason it was locked in at 2GB).

Looking in the VRay log and comparing timestamps, it appears the error happens as soon as the lightcache calcs begin (see attached vray log file)

The job appears to render fine if lightcache is disabled.

Correction, if I switch out lightcache for irradience map, I get a new error at the end of the VRay logfile:

    Code:
    [2008/May/20|11:41:34] Rendering frame region (0,0)-(1280,720).
[2008/May/20|11:41:34] Photon size is 56 bytes.

And with both primary and secondary bounce set to Brute Force, I get the same error as with Irrmap:

      Code:
      [2008/May/20|11:44:48] Rendering frame region (0,0)-(1280,720).
[2008/May/20|11:44:48] Photon size is 56 bytes.
[2008/May/20|11:44:48] Light cache sample size is 120 bytes.
      [2008/May/20|11:44:48] Rendering image.
      [2008/May/20|11:44:48] Setting up 2 thread(s)
[2008/May/20|11:45:07] error: UNHANDLED EXCEPTION: Rendering region (0,128)-(64,192)

Bumping up the dynamic memory limit appears to have solved the problem.

Is this the kind of exception that can be programatically caught so that a useful error can be passed back to backburner?

Hm, it was supposed to be passed back as an error; maybe I have to look again.

          Best regards,

I'm getting a very similar problem.

It's rendering fine on 14 out of 16 machines. I've submitted 7 sets of renders for different cameras, but none of them work on 2 machines. They are all pretty much identical machines other than minor things like machine name of course. I'm not sure what's up.

No GI here either. Just straight up renderings using DMC for antialiasing. I do have a dome light though.

I can try bumping up the dynamic mem limit after the job completes. I just don't have time to fool around with it until after I'm done with the job.

I rechecked some of the settings. I changed the dynamic mem even to 1000 and get the same thing. Only on those two machines though.

I've opened the vray log and get no errors at all, which is strange.

Can you send us the scene for investigation?

Does it render if LC is disabled?
