The more I tested, the more I got confused, but then I understood!!

The controls are for all layers not selected in the list? Would it be possible to change it so you can have different layers/xref's with differend matte settings? I realise thats probably a lot more code! I think the xref function is more important.

It works very well, but I wonder if it would be safer and easier to have the layers you select the ones to be matte, not the other way round? What does anyone else think?

I felt like it was better to select non-matte layers because there are less of them to select. I feel like it's a bit of a misnomer though. I want it to be terribly straightforward, any other ideas.

XREFs are included in the layer control because xrefs are on layers that are visible in the regular scene. The checkbox for "override xrefs" will be there. When on, it will continue the same matteing and also go through xrefs and override them on selected layers.

Yeah I guess its the same either way, and your right, its less layers to select this way round, I keep forgetting tho!!

I've made a test scene, with a couple of objects, and a couple of xrefs, with all layers named well to test. Ill of course ignore the xref function for now till its turned on.

It all seems to work very well. Im testing on the network now to see how it works.

          Cheers

please continue with your testing! If you find yourself doing the same thing often (like changing the BG color to black and turning on an override or whatnot) let me know and I'll add a button to do this for you.

A couple of things so far.
              - Maybe add a render btn at the bottom right of the dialogue. Speeds up the process a little!
              - As you say, the BG colour, maybe an overide btn, and a colour swatch?
              - could the script automatically revert all settings when closed? I found saving the file kept the matte changes, and had to run the script again to clear settings. This would'nt be a problem if you got in the habbit of clicking reset before saving, or closing.

Ill test the network now -

              Edit:
It seems sending the job over the network is all good, but I guessed it would be. The problem will come when Xrefs are added, and getting settings to transfer with the files to net render, but while keeping the original files unchanged!

I think Ill have to continue with testing once Xrefs are in place, as this is the main feature I will be using. I dont normally make mattes from objects in the scene, as its only a light and camera in there.

Looking forward to the next release.

              Cheers

Excellent m_hinks. I'll implement xrefs tonight when I get home, look for a late update tonight.

I'll also add a bg color swatch set to black, and I really like the idea of reverting to the reset state when closed which is very easy, do you think people would get confused though if they closed it and tried to render? I'll add a prompt asking the user if they want to revert to un-matte settings if you want.

Sweet! Ill look forward to testing tomorrow.

I think when people are sending renders for mattes its realistic to think they will set the pass with the script and render without closing it, and then set up a new matte and render, but having the prompt will help eliminate closing by mistake.

                  Good job.

Got it working on xrefs, registering the callback and testing with backburner now.

Great! Alright it seems my original method of having a callback mechanism only half works. I got a response on CGTalk for how to get around this "feature" (read bug) in 3dsmax. It is clear that property changes to xrefs do not save with files, this is why network rendering does not work. It is easy enough to get around. Look for an update around lunchtime (hopefully if it goes smoothly).

drat. I want it available over the weekend so you can fix my oversights! I'll take an early lunch (in 1.5hrs to get it somewhere useable)
