  • Render Settings and flickering animation with hair and fur

    Hi all

I'm getting some flickering on my hiar and fur object in an animation. With scanline nothing flickers. I'm using max frame buffer.
    Here are my VRay settings:

    Image Sampler:
    Type - Adaptive DMC
    AA Filter - Quadratic

    Adaptive DMC Image Sampler:
    Min sub - 1
    Max sub - 100
use dmc sampler thresh = ticked

In environment my skylight is on and I also have one directional light acting as the sun.

    Color mapping = everything default

    GI:
Primary and secondary - Brute Force
    subdivs - 10 secondary - 3

    DMC Sampler
    Adaptive - 0.85 and min samples 10
noise thresh - 0.005 and global sub multiplier 1.5

Here is a short sample of the file

    Any suggestions?

1/100 is overkill. Can you post a short video file to demonstrate your flickering problem.

sounds like your render setting are pretty high enough to don't have flickering.
It could help to see a sample of your problem.

you could may be put your skylight in a vray light as dome and uncheck your skylight. render will be much longer but result much more accurate if it's that the problem...
may be put your noise thresh at 0,001, your rendertime will be all so much higher

Can I bring it down to maybe 10 or so?
Here is a short sample of the file

As you can see in the foreground every so often some of the grass displays much darker than the rest. almost black, randomly over different frames flickering. It does not do it in scanline.
        Any thoughts?

At the moment I'm getting rendertime of 12 seconds at 1024X576.
In this scene lots more stuff to be added like trees, bushes, helicopter, missile, people and some afterburn. But for now I'm worried about this flickering on the grass.

What render settings or other things would you suggest?
        Kind Regards,
        Morne

well if I understand correctly, the grass is generated by 3ds max, not vray. So this really has nothing to do with the anti aliasing which is done by vray. In fact if you had vray do 1/100 @ 0.005 on the geometrical grass, it would take much longer then 12 seconds per frame. So, having said that, you may want to look in, into 3ds maxes options. Or, try to find another way of rendering the grass, either with mental ray or 3ds max directly.

mind posting your hair&fur settings ?

It might be rounding errors for the blade's normal (as it seems they are rendered as cam facing polys rather then real strands)

              Sorted

In hair and fur render settings, just change ligthing to "emulation". This is supposedly less acurate, but I can't see the difference except now the flickering is gone, so in this case it sorted my problem. (and it even renders quicker)

                !@#$%&*

well "emulation" works fine in one scene, in another scene the hair renders all black
