  • Animating colours!?

    Hi everybody,

I recently did an interior scene and want to animate it so that colour and materials gradually come into the room starting in one end. I have a rendering with a grey override material on everything which would be my first frame and then I essentially want the final frame to be with full colour and material but i want the materials to gradually "roll" over the scene. Is this possible?

I recently saw a car commercial that utilized something similar but I was unable to find it for reference now.

I have no idea how to go about this but hopefully one of you guys have a bright idea!

    thanks.

    Anders

You could create a black and white mask and animate the mapping along the models in your scene to change them from black to white. Then use that pass as a mask in post to add color.

What about rendering it once with the grey overide materials, then once with your materials applied. Then you can apply a cross fade in post production. You could even get clever by rendering out mattes for different elements and then you can have some coming in as coloured at different times?

Yep, what Tricky suggested is probably the best way to do it.

          Hi Anders,

I've done the colour rolling in from the camera thing using the z-depth as a matte in Combustion. These are stills taken from the test movie, I used live footage as the starting point but you could use your scene rendered with a grey override material.

          Hope that helps,

            Thanks for the input everybody.

I was hoping to find a way to do the actual animation in Max since I have little experience with animation and no experience what so ever outside of Max. But it seems like I'll have to do some reading and solve it outside of Max then! At least it doesn't sound too tricky from your feedback
