  • Animation with moving lifts - slowdown

I am doing a bit of test animation of an office that has a couple of moving elevators.

I pre-computed the LC (2000 world samples) in flythrough mode, but with all the components of these lifts (glass/stainless steel/timber/etc) set to not cast any GI.

When I render a frame without the lifts visible, frame time is around 10 minutes. When I render with the lifts visible, render time jumps to around 1.5 hours.

I am using Brute Force and LC, and the lifts themselves are taking up approx 1/6th of the frame.

What is the best way to do this? I am not bothered about GI on the lifts as they are largely reflective and there is a vray sun/sky creating enough light to illuminate them (they are in a glazed atrium)
    Kind Regards,
    Richard Birket

Try to turn off the generate/receive GI options for the lifts.

    Best regards,

What is the difference between doing that and unticking 'visible to GI'?

They do different things... "visible to GI" OFF means that the object will not affect how GI is calculated for other objects - but GI will still be calculated for that object itself (unliess you have turned off the "Receive GI" option).
