  • black outline on highlight

I am getting a black outline on the highlight of a reflective metal surface. Has anyone else encountered anything like this? What is causing the black outline of the highlight?

The lighting is the Vray Sun.
    Primary bounces: Irradiance map
    Secondary bounces: Brute Force

    Thanks for the help

Turn on "clamp ouptut" and "subpixel color mapping" options and this will solve the issue.

Those black edges around very bright and sharp highlights show up when you use AA filters with negative/sharpening components like catmull rom. If you are going for a very crisp look and don't want to use subpixel mapping/clamp output, you can just render without any aa filter and the result should be errorfree and as sharp as it gets without any additional/artificial sharpening.

A different, but nice approach, Michael.

But that leads me to mention that this effect can be seen on photos as well, but is seen as an unnatural effect.
This might be the consequence of a big exposure and f-stop value.
