  • Red dots

    Hi all!

Take a look at the attached image:

What is the meaning of those red dots?
    What do they represent?

Is this an error, or - as someone from Microsoft would say - a feature?

That's not the first time i've stumbled upon them, and I just can't find the cause...

In the scene we have some proxies, heavy refl/refr with some blurry elements, 2d displacement for grass, std sun/sky setup with physcam.
GI is irr/bf, nothing out of the ordinary.
    All materials are vraymats.

    Any ideas?

and btw - i did a search, but found nothing. some old threads about vray RC3 and RPC...

    edit:
well would you look at that..

now I have to find a way to have the dots in RGB, not just one or two colors

What V-Ray version is this? Have you tried restarting 3ds max, and/or enabling the 3ds Max Bitmap pager? Do you get warnings in the V-Ray log file?

      vray 1.5 SP2.

but I found the problem - it was the second vray_sun, that was merged into the scene when
I loaded some materials from an older scene. Seems that it didn't illuminate anything, but was causing all the colorfull dots (later there were pink, orange and do on).
The sun was merged on a hidden layer, so I didn't see it right away...
But the strange thing is that when I was rendering ONLY the trees - all was fine. When I was rendering everything BUT the trees - all was fine. The problem started to pop up when the scene was complete. Weird. Memory issue?

Vlado - as this problem seems to be pretty old (I remember it from RC versions), can this be fixed in SP3 or subsequent releases? I'm talking about unwanted merging of the vray_sun when loading a material from another scene to mateditor.

      thanks!

No, I can't fix this unfortunately. It is a 3ds Max issue and I don't see a way around it myself. I will submit an issue to Autodesk though.

Thanks Vlado, looks like we have to wait till the autodesk guys fix this issue.
'cause to be honest - it's a real pain in the a**.
