  • VRAY Environment Fog problems

I am seeing strange issues when trying to animate the texture map within the Vray Environment fog Density parameter. Basically if you animate the position or phase the fist frame will render but all the other frames will stop forever at light cache. Can anyone else test this?

Would be great to animate cloud formations.

There is an animation I did for the help index that works fine - you can find it along with the scene here:
    http://www.spot3d.com/vray/help/150S...entfog.htm#ex4

If you have a scene where you have issues, please send it to me at vlado@chaosgroup.com for investigation.

    Best regards,
    Vlado

I've run into the same issues.

As long as it's on one machine, and rendered in order from the the first frame it will work fine.

If you animate the noise/phase/position, then move the time slider to a frame further along down the animation it will get stuck (whether it's LC, irr, BF)

What's even more curious is that if you start rendering the first frame, you can then cancel that render, and use the time output in the render render scene dialog/common tab to render a frame further down the timeline, as long as the timeslider itself isnt moved.

For example (assuming the noise map in the cloud scene is animated (example atatched)):

      render frame 0 works fine
move time slider to frame 50, won't render
move time slider back to frame 0, renders fine.
set frame 50 to render in the time output (while leaving time slider at 0) renders fine.
moving time slider back out to 50 again and it won't render (even though it just rendered fine previously)

It happens in reverse order as well:

move time slider to frame 50 won't render
leave time slider there, but set the time output to frame 0 and it will render
set the time output back to singe (with the time slider still at 50) and it will now render frame 50.

So it seems as long as the machine is alowed to at least start rendering the first frame, and the timeslider isn't touched again, it will render the sequence. If you want to render it over the network it won't work since only one machine gets to do the first frame, the others will be stuck at whatever frame they started at.

      - edit -
on top of that, it doesn't seem to be 100% repeatable. Now the scene is partially working again (will render other frames by moving the time slider, even though I've only saved it and re-opened it) but just opening and going directly to a different frame other that the start is still broken.

      - edit again -
now it seems to be tied to the mat editor. The miraculously 'fixed' cloud scene broke again once I opend the mat editor, and reverted to the original symptoms.

I still can't figure out the exact combo of what breaks what, but there is something weird going on.

Ah, I see. I can reproduce that and we will be looking into it.

        Best regards,

So I can see why this is happening (problem is in a weird quirk of the Noise map). It will be fixed, but in the meantime if you need a fix, please email me to vlado@chaosgroup.com

            Thanks Vlado.

I tried it again with some of the other procedural maps, and they all seem to work fine when animated (including the BlurNoise map)

Yep, it is the Noise that is problematic...
