  • low priority thread

    Hi there,

I have an i7 cpu system. When I used to select low priority thread the OS would be nice and smooth and allow me to do other things whilst max was rendering. Now when I select the LPT, my mouse judders all over the place. I have to go into 3dsmax afinity and turn off one the cpus dedicated to max. Anyone know if this is a latest vray issue or an i7 issue ?
    Regards

That part of V-Ray has not changed, so I doubt that it is a V-Ray issue.

not a core i7 issue, nor vray. i have both, it's smooth as is has never been with core2quad, etc.

maybe some driver issue or strange background process?

Hmm. My system seems to be "fairly" stable now. My graphics card was causing lots of problems but that isnt in at the moment..If I select low priority thread for 3dsmax should all cores still reach 100% when rendering ?

Yes, processor usage will still be 100%, but Windows will give more time to other programs you are using, as needed.

this was a 'gift' with max2008\2009.. not sure if it only happens with windows x64 or what, but the 3dsmax.exe process no longer respects processor priority. the system will turn to molasses when doing any kind of processor intensive stuff (i.e. rendering)--happens with both mental ray and vray.

was hoping it would be fixed in 2010--haven't had any experience with it yet though.

Thing is, it used to be fine until I upgraded my system. I was using a quad core 6700 and the low priority thread option used to work fine. That was also with 2009. I only upgraded my system recently...

what changed when you upgraded your system? (cpu? OS?)

[edit: i ask because if it was fine before it must be a compound problem. we've been using the same systems since max9--which didn't exhibit the issue, and both 2008\2009 have the problem]

Im using exactly the same OS - winxp64. Max 2009 64 bit. The system is now a I7 system. Different memory, cpu and motherboard.

I have no trouble so far with max and LPT set on in vray on my shiny i7, but I use vista 64, max 2009 x64 and vray sp3a x64.

Same old video card? Have the video drivers been updated?

I have a bfg 295 gtx card. Latest drivers. This has occasionally been giving blue screens, but I had it replaced recently and it doesnt do that anymore.

I'm running the same system with the latest SP3a. It definitely is stuttering with all the processors running in low priority now. I'm not quite sure what happened - but I will update my graphics drivers later today.

Seems to me that the latest x64 drivers (April 2nd) improved the stability a bit. The last time I updated them was back in March.
