  • Low Thread Priority not working ?

    Hi Guys,

Has any else been suffering in max 2010 and vraySP3 not using Low Thread Priority ? we switched to 2010 a week ago, generally its great until you press render! ... with max9 we could have 2 copies of max open, use outlook ect ect ... with 2010 we can't do anything, we can hardly move the mouse!! .. vray is in Low thread, max is being forced to go in low thread but still the same as if its being ignored? anyone else had the same issue?

Which operating system is that? In any case, I don't think it's a problem of V-Ray specifically, since the code for the low priority option has not changed. Even if it didn't, forcing low priority on the entire process would normally work, since it is enforced by Windows, not by the application.

I've noticed that issues like you describe can happen if there is excessive disk or network access for whatever reason; with the bitmap pager being enabled by default, this can happen during rendering. You can try to disable the bitmap pager through maxscript, save the scene (this is important as the bitmap pager state is saved in the scene), restart 3ds Max and see what happens.

Thanks Vlado, didnt think it was a vray issue.. what a stupid thing to do, to take away the option! ... anyways, ibitmappager.enabled = false doesnt seem to work?

You need to set it to false, save the scene, restart 3ds Max and load the scene again. No guarantee that it will help though.

I face that since switching to Corei7 (max 2k8 x64). I assumed it would have to do with hyperthreading. Weirdly it only really kicks in when AA is enabled heh.

hi all, i have the same problem with the low thread priority on sp3a xp 64 max design 2010 on core i7. but i had no problems with the same scene in 2009 on the same machine... i dont know, if this is vray problem, because, when i try to set the 3dmax.exe process to a low priority with the task manager, the computer still remains to busy to work with...

we have noticed the same, when you render, is the Lighcache worse than the IRR map ? we are finding the computer is being hit hard when calc' ing the LC and not so much when rendering and IRR ? ...

Its a lot to do with the bitmap pager, it is constantly on now! ... you can try to switch it off but without much luck..

i dont have max 2010...about the thread priority, you could use a temporary solution (I use it all the time)
you can create a maxstart.bat file in which you can put a line "start /belownormal 3dsmax.exe" without the quotes.
This will auto set 3ds max and any processes spawned by 3ds max in below normal thread state, thus relieving the stress from your system rendering.

i set the bitmap pager to false, but there is no real improvement. maybe the first 2 seconds it seems to be better. the only way to work with now and to email during rendering is to give the 3dmax.exe only 7cpu (core i7) and loose some power during the rendering.
