    Vray reads ani. directions through the black\white range. So a gradient mapped on a box with black at the bottom and white at the top, will direct the "grain" along the gradient. To achieve the circular pattern, you can use a gradient set to spiral to controll it.

      so, I just haven't had time recently to test this, but will Vray therefore convert the coloured map into a B&W map? Just trying to understand what happens - will test this as soon as I have met some deadlines!

        Well my guess is that it reads the luminance, so if your colour gradient goes from 100% red to 100% green, it would get confused.
