  • Displacement Grass_Shadow Problem

Hi there - I've got a bit of a problem when it comes to shadows being cast on the displaced grass (plane with 2d Vraydispmod):

In all the camera views the shadows appear correct - dark shadows to simulate middle of the day sun settings - except when I set up a camera viewing directly to the sun position.
    (see images)..

Obviously the displaced grass blades are casting their own shadow which means the object shadow are completely lost - not very realistic??

Please help me out - The only way to get some object shadow to appear is to lower the amount of displacement (60mm in this scene) - but then the displacement effect gets lost.

    Any ideas?

    Regards

    Hi,

maybe if you use Vray2sidedMtl on top of your grass material and play with the translucency color the shadows will be more apparent.

        Hi,

glad I helped a bit. Your grass lost it's colour now because of Vray sky light beneath it. You can copy your terrain geometry and move it a bit down and assign a simple material ( like black ) to avoid this effect.

          Grass fixed..now glass

Thanks man - really appreciate the feedback - The next major issue for me is how to create a
shiny glass texture for windows (any tips...sounds like you know a thing or two?)

I've tried the basic setup where difuse color is black, white reflection color with fresnel checked (IOR of 1.5) and white refraction.

The glass looks okay but I want something "shinier" if you know what I mean_still be able to see objects inside the building? The vray sky are reflected so maybe that's why it's a bit boring?

            You're welcomed.
Well glass settings are something different.
From your settings it seems that your IOR values are quite low so there is little reflection if any. I usually use fresnel fallof map that givers me more control using 20,20,20 instead of black and 225,225,225 instead of white.
If there are large areas of glass that need to reflect the sky i use HDRI map for reflections. Otherwise I just use VraySky and add some curtains behind the windows...

Everyone has his own glass/reflection style and you can find plenty of posts here on the forum.
