    'Failed to initialize proxy object XX with file XX'

    ^^ this.

    what is the cause?
    the file is present, the paths are correct.

    one reason I can think of is that the proxies were created with sp3a (IIRC), and I'm trying to render them on a machine with older v-ray version. is that the issue? are the proxies created with newer version of v-ray incompatible with older version?

      It depends on how much older is the older version. At some point compression was introduced to the .vrmesh files (I think in sp2 though).
