render elements illegal character error

Trying to render a scene with some render elements but the render aborts prior to rendering
with the following error:

"The path of the following render elements either have an illegal character in its path or the filename or the path does not exist."

The paths exists and the filenames aren't using any strange characters. When I disable the render elements it renders fine.

This message is displayed by 3ds Max itself; if you copy and paste the path and enter it into a Windows Explorer window, does it go to the correct folder?
