There's a little trick I use when I dont have time to compose the shot, fast little project in wich it used to do the job, it does' nt anymore with max 2010 with vray sp4a. Here's the situation. For rendering my background sky, wich is applied to a sphere, with no GI on that geometry, it's always too dark due to the vray physical camera, so I put my bitmap in an output material and push the output ammount to match illumination of the scene and camera exposure setting, in this case the output ammount is raise up to 50. Usually in max 2009 I get the result you see on the right side of the picture, now in max 2010 It give the result shown on the left side. The output material does' nt seem to react the same way it use to in max 2009. Any reason for this? Its not a big deal since Im using this trick for fast little project but sometimes it was worth it!
