It was my understanding that the raw elements are anti-aliased and there for don't mathematically go back together correctly, giving dark edges. So when you take Lighting / DiffuseFilter = RawLighting (Now with NO edge aliasing). This newly created element removes the anti-aliasing and when you add them back together everything works correctly.
This entire concept was explained VERY well in the Gnomon DVD by Tim Jones called: Multi-Pass Compositing. http://www.thegnomonworkshop.com/sto...ss-Compositing
I HIGHLY recommend getting this DVD! He works with Fusion, but the concepts all apply to Nuke. I use a slightly moddified version of his system to get my renders to comp back together with no "halos" or "ringing".
