  • Noise/grain with vray materials

I noticed on a recent project that I got a lot (!) of noise/grain on a basic 50% gray VRayMaterial. I tweaked all the settings in the render dialog, vraylight shadow subdivs. etc. - but nothing improved it.

Then I switched the VRayMaterial to a standard 3ds max material, and the noise/grain was gone!

Can you please fix this bug!

Can you provide a stripped down sample scene to disect the issue ?

It has hdri lighting /reflections - so I was hoping I didn't have to upload anything I have had this problem before with other lighting setups. Have also heard about other people with the same problem (no on this forum though), and it is fixed when using a standard 3ds max material. This is for clean color shaders, not with textures/diffuse map.

I just set up a simple scene with HDR lighting and the basic 50% grey material, both Vray and Standard, using IM/LC GI. The noise was identicle using each material, even when using Brute Force on both GI bounces. Sounds like something scene or lighting related.

A simple scene that illustrates the problem would probably be the way to the bottom of this...perhaps the characteristics of the HDR file are being treated differently with the two types of materials or something like that.

I just tried your scene, is GI supposed to be on or off?
IF its supposed to be off the vray material is noisy - if you want it clean turn the subdivs on the domelight up to 50 and it is clean.
When the GI is on (IRmap and LC) it renders clean.

jacks: I understand that - but why should there be a difference between a standard material and a vray material?? Doesn't make sense to me
