  • VRay2.0 BETA: will it get faster?

    Hello together,
we bought four licenses of vray 2.0.
Actually we stay with 3ds max 2008 and vray 1.5 SP5.
As Autodesk subscription customer we thought about a big max update in the early new year and simoultanous to switch to vray 2.0.
So I tested an old scene at first with max 2008 amd vray 1.5 and then with max 2011 and vray 2.0.
The scene has about 7.5 Mio polys, some proxys, very much bitmap-maps, a huge amount of CAD-geometry and a little bit displacement. A nice mix of different features I thougt ideal as a testing scene.
The rendering was done with a 8core XEON with 8GB Ram

In max 2008 with vray 1.5 it rendered in 47min-58sec
In max 2011 with vray 2.0 it renderd in 48min-27sec

I know 2.0 is still beta so I decided to start this thread. Will it get faster in final version?

    Best regards,
    stefan

That might just be the 3ds Max Bitmap Pager - it tends to slow things down and in newer releases had a nasty habit of turning itself on... You can check that it's off by going to your Render/Common tab and scrolling down to bitmap proxies... It should be disabled.

The same thing has happened before with other versions of vray - when you load an old scene into a newer version of vray, your material and render settings might be far too high for the newer vray and slow everything down. The only real way to test is is with a brand new scene and see what type of settings you need to get the same quality you had in vray 1.5 As an example a lot of older scenes had really high glossy samples for clean reflections but with the newer versions of the dmc sampler you could get away with 8 samples and get the same quality. On a good note though, your render time between vray 1.5 and 2 is really close so if you need to load up an old scene at least it's not going to be way slower than rendering in 1.5.

is it rendering any faster with opacity maps and low opacity in general? having a map in the opacity slot and rendering with motionblur is still 10 times slower then other renderers....

            Hi Joconnel.
Your right, in a direct comparison, the 2.0 image has a better GI in some parts. But to build up the scene directly new from scratch is not really possible.
The only thing I could say for now is that like you said "..it's not going to be way slower..". Very well
            Best regards,
            Stefan

Based on your test (Max 2008, VRAY 1.5 vs Max2011, VRAY 2.0) why not test Max 2011 with 1.5 and see what the time is? Seems weird to just blame it on VRAY 2.0 when it's not an apples to apples comparison.

                  Hi dlparisi,
your right! I should test max 2011 with 1.5. But I think this wouldnt be an option for me in production
                  best regards stefan

Why? You seem to be testing both Max 2011 and vray2.0, just seems a good idea to test max2011 with vray 1.5 since 2.0 is still in beta (regardless of any possible speed improvements when it actually ships).

                            Hi dlparisi,
today I testet another combination of max 2008 and vray 2.0
The rendertime was 50 min 50 sec.
                            Here the complete list again:

In max 2008 with vray 1.5 it rendered in 47min-58sec
In max 2008 with vray 2.0 it rendered in 50min-50sec
In max 2011 with vray 2.0 it rendered in 48min-27sec

To be fair I have to mention that the GI of 2.0 is cleaner than the 1.5
At this time speed improvements wont cause me to update my renderfarm.
The other knew features will be the reason
                            Best regards Stefan
