  • DR missing maps - again... kinda

I have been searching the forums for days, but nobody seems to be answering the question.

All my maps are stored on a public network drive, but the nodes render gray.

I have several nodes, and they are all logged in as the same user as my workstation, so permissions/credentials aren't the problem, so neither is access to the files. I did notice this in the V-ray help files:

"If you store the files on a network location (through network shares or mapped drives), keep in mind that the non-server versions of the Windows* operating systems impose a limit on the number of simultaneous accesses to any given file through the network. This may result in odd rectangle artifacts in the image if a render server fails to load a file."

Does that mean multiple machines cannot access the files at the same time? If so, that's stupid. How can we get around that? I don't want to paste my textures on every machine locally.

I would love to finally get to the bottom of this. Thanks for any suggestions.

Running DR as a service or manually starting it on all machines?
What OS on machine hosting the Bitmaps? (No way to get around the simultaneous access limit on Non-Server OSes, that I am aware of)
How many machines are trying to access that machine at one time?
Double check all firewalls! (They can sometimes be reactivated after an OS update)

I will try to help the best I can.

Thank you so much for your response.

Our network which is hosting the files is using windows server 2003.

I have 5 render nodes trying to access the files. No firewalls are on.

Are you using mapped networked drives or UNC pathing?

For some reason, your rendernodes can't see the textures, so something is not setup right.

            What version of Max? Vray?

Are the render machines Vista/Win 7? Try turning the UAC off.

Turned off uac. still no change. I wonder if the problem is in unc pathing. How do I do that?

It's not UNC pathing, because I just did a quick test and with the spawner running as a program, I can use mapped drives and UNC without problems.

Can you go to one of the slave machines and open a bitmap with photoshop or some type of image viewer?

It just screams permission problem...very frustrating. Basically you need to figure out why your slaves can't see the bitmaps.

Yeah. I don't have anything but max installed on them, but I opened the maps with windows photo viewer just fine.

I think you guys were right on the UAC. After rebooting the nodes, they all rendered with textures! I think we are good to go now.
