artifacts during render that don't respond to changes in settings

I've been setting up render for a long time with no problems but suddenly I'm getting these artifacts during render that don't respond to changes in settings! Also I've tuned sun on and off, environment lighting on and so on. I'd like to understand this.

Any help is much appreciate,

Looks like you added some IBL to the image, or your "Show Samples" in Irradiance Map is ticked.

Do you get any warnings in the V-Ray messages window?

Sorry, I was away.

No warnings or other msgs in the Vray window. "Show Samples" in Irradiance Map is unticked. IBL on or off gets the same results! Maddening! It was a very simple render and it went wrong in an instant, like an accidental setting change or something like that. No clue.

In that case it would be best if you can get us the scene (or a part of it that shows the problem) to vray@chaosgroup.com and we'll take a look at what's wrong.

Have you tried reseting your render setting to default & start again????

I have had 3ds max corrupt vray materials so you may want to check that out as well
