  • Line/Cable Animation - VRay RT

    Hey Guys,

I have made a simple cable animation based on a line by simply moving the vertices to simulate the cable movement. The cable/Spline itself is enabled in the Renderer and the Viewport by selecting "Radial" within the Modifier List.

When rendering this animation in VRay RT everything is displayed correctly except for the cable animation itself. When rendering the animation in the default Scanline Renderer the animation works fine.

I also tried baking the animation with the "bakeAnim_v1.2" script. Unfortunately even that doesn't work for VRay RT.

As I am new to VRay RT and could find anything regarding this on Google or these fine forums (), it would be great if somebody would know a solution for this, as I couldn't find anything so far.

    Cheers!

P.S.: In case this might help in finding a solution: I am using 3DsMax 2011 with VRay RT 2.00.02

Are you using V-Ray RT as a production renderer?

    Best regards,

Ok then; it's a bug. It is fixed now and will go into the next update, but you can email me to vlado@chaosgroup.com if you need it sooner than that. Another option would be to use the "Make V-Ray RT animation preview script" with the ActiveShade.

Seems to work with the preview stuff now. Thanks for the hint and quick help. Cheers!

Edit: Does not work completely. The preview renderer crashes randomly with various error messages or none at all and at various points. Please see my e-mail for additional details.

          Cheers.

It could be that the amount of vertices in the spline are changing between frame and causing vray to freak out - might be worth turning off adaptive on your spline and seeing if that works - we did a lot of whip shots in here recently and the changing vertex count caused crashes with motion blur.

Thanks for the hint, but I have had adaptive turned off all the time.
I will try another animation preview render now by reducing the interpolation for the splines and delete the mesh smooth modifier to see how that works.

The same goes for optimize. It will change the poly\vert count depending on curvature.

Unfortunately, that does not help either. I even changed the the interpolation steps to the minimum (1) with optimize and adaptive turned off. It does not even look like a cable anymore.

Not a perfect workaround but I just I rendered the animation step by step. Meaning I just restarted 3DsMax and the animation preview mode after each crash and changed the range of the pictures from the last successful jpg created.

It is a pain in the a$$ atm, but as long as it works until an update for this bug is released this is at least something I can create a preview with. Going to be even worse for the final render though...-.-
