  • Vray 1.5 -> 2.0 = NOISE!

My team is "in between versions" when it comes to Max and Vray. I've created a scene in max2010/Vray1.50SP5 and rendered it on max2011/Vray2.00.02. I've kept the render settings. Now vray2.0 renders the image with an incredibly ugly noise!

I've read about migrating between vray versions (http://www.spot3d.com/vray/help/200R...ate_to_1_5.htm), but afaik, this shouldn't pose any problems to these scenes. (Only slightly longer render times, if I understood it correctly.)

I've included pictures of the renders at 100% size, no post production made. Also included my render settings. Please let me know if you see anything wrong in them.

Lights are set at 8 subdivs, materials between 8 and 16.

There is a known issue in the original 2.0 release with "subpixel mapping" and "clamp output" enabled. This is fixed for the service pack later this month, but in the meantime, you can either turn these options off, or else define a Windows environment variable called "VRAY_OLD_SAMPLING" with a value of "1" without the quotes.

    Best regards,
    Vlado

Alright. Good to know. Rendering without subpixel mapping can lead to other artifacts, so adding that value will probably do it for now. I found it strange that such obvious noise would be visible in the most brightly lit parts of the render. I'll make some tests to see if there might be another way around it though... who knows.

The environment variable solved the problem. Looking forward to the SP though.

Sorry, but how do you add this value ? I presume you have to access Windows Registry Editor, but after that ...
            Thanks for any help.

BTW, is it necessary to do that on every slave for distributed rendering / BB ?

                  Thanks.

Editing the env variable worked like a charm! Thanks.

It should be released around the end of this month.

                            Ok, great !
Btw, the env variable trick works really nicely !! you can't imagine how much time I lost so far fighting this noise ...

                            Regards.

@vlado thanks for this workaround. it's a time saver.

my question is am I rendering with vray 1.5 core now? because enabling "vray_old_sampling" 1 is enabling an old sampling of something...

                              best regards
