  • Spawner set as Service - service starts, but cant DR

On my slaves if I run the spawner.exe I can DR happily and everything works as it should.

But now if I set spawner as a service on my slaves, and add the correct user credentials for the service to acces the shares, the service starts fine, but on my workstation when DR, it's asif those slaves dont have spawner running. Just doesnt run. If I stop the spawner service and just run it as exe, then everything is fine.

I want to switch to using it as a service, but no joy so far, its not even a case of the slaves not seeing the shares, it's a case of the service seemingly not working even though it succesfully starts as a service?

Very weird. Anybody has some ideas I can try?
    Kind Regards,
    Morne

If you look at the Task Manager on the render slaves, do you see the vrayspawner process and the 3ds Max copy that it spawns (remember to turn on the "Show processes from all users" option)?

Have you also enabled the spawner and 3ds Max through Windows Firewall?

      Best regards,

I've had issues with using the spawner as a service before, so we just have a shortcut of spawner.exe in the startup folder instead on all slaves.

I'll have to check task manager when I get back to the office. But what I dont understand is why would the service be any different than the exe? I mean if it works by manually doing it (without changing anything on the firewall), then why would I need to adjust firewall settings if it is run as a service?

@Chris: Yes I prefer to do it like you and have been doing it like that for the past couple of years. Problem is relocated my slaves and to save cabling I skipped the mouse, keyboard, monitor etc and also opted no need for KVM switch, so my slaves only has lan cable and power cable. I remote dekstop into them to setup what needed and shut them down with a script. So you see I have to make the stupid service work somehow, otherwise I'm buggered as the space is very tight and no space for more cabling.

I see the vrayspawner process yes. The 3ds Max process however acts weird. It starts, but then in about 2 seconds terminates, then start and again terminates and so it loops.
              Any ideas?

Try going to Services, find the dr spawner, right click - Properties - Log On - This Account and fill out the User/Pass to a user that has admin rights. I found i had to do this to get textures working through DR even when using UNC paths.

My Dr is working ok if i open the vrayspawner manually, the problem is when i use spawner as a service, without open vrayspawner manually. Did you solve this problem doing this?

I was getting intermittent problems with spawner as a service even with the correct user credentials. So ended up scratching that idea and just run spanwer manually. Haven't had any problems since then.

So your registering as a service every time you start up your computer? You should only be doing it once.

Make sure once registered you go into services and check that its set to start automatically, then for the first time only right click, start service. From then on every time you reset computer it'll start up. If you have texture problems do what i suggested in last post, set service to login as an admin account, then restart service.
