  • Max 2011 crash on render and save

Recently Ive been having issues with crashes. I can start a render and max will crash straight out with no error. I can reach the end of a render and do a manual save from the vray VFB and max will crash.

I have 24gb or ram and these scenes are pretty small. Nothing unusual going on in the scenes..

Not sure if this is a max issue or vray issue.

Have you checked your RAM for errors and CPU for overheating?

If the cpu was overheating wouldn't the entire system crash..not just max to desktop. Anyway, the cpu is not overheating because I have cpuz monitoring and it is always below 60degs. I'll check the memory for errors...been having strange resets of my system at random times. Would you recommend a memory testing programme ?

Well. Last night I adjusted my memory voltage and a few other things on the bios and (touch wood) things seem ok now. My memory voltage was too high so Im guessing that may have been the main problem. Can't be sure until I test over more time.

happens mostly when regiion rendering and DR
if i exit the VFB and then stop the rendering its ok, but if i do it the other way round, its crashes and flashes

Max did another crash for me so its not the memory issues. I also did a ram test using memtest86+ and it didn't fail at all.

I have installed some windows 7 updates..quite a few recently..Ive known those to cause issues in the past with max..just picking at straws really..

When it crashes, do you get either the 3ds Max error reporting dialog or the Windows one? They both write dump files with information about the crash, which may be useful.

I personally don't get any error dialog at all. Just crashes straight to desktop.

Hm, you should at least get the Windows dialog that a program has crashed or something (unless you turned this off).

                      Best regards,
                      Vlado

                          so...regarding these crashes ))

i always get them on render end...
splait chanels save fine....save to exr results in corrupted file

i get it no matter if i render with DR or standalone
no matter if i use exposure control or not

memory is fine, so is the cpu.
i have also ruled out the scattering plugins now.

i have a very strange feeling this might be because of some of the windows updates now.

i am moving to max2012 and vray 2.0 today so i will see how it will work or now...i will also do a fresh reinstall of win7

if i only knew which bloody windows update does the problem :-////

Same for me in the latest project i'm working on.
If i cancel a render it freezes, on render end it freezes. (i'm using DR)
I do get a windows dialog saying the program isn't working anymore (so i suppose i could send a windows dumpfile?)

i first thought it was a combination of multiscatter and using xref's. It solved the problem after deleting the xrefs.
But now it freezes again.. i will try merging it to a new file and see what happen.

i ve reinstalled the comp completely i havent got the bug yet....will see
might be connected to a specific windows update pack!!!
the dump file might help but i was not able to get one as that itself crashed as well!!!
